Peton council denies licence renewal for motel after high-call volume and occupancy concerns

Peton Township Council voted on July 1 to decline renewal of the license for the Budget Lodge (the property's current operating name was discussed in the meeting) following staff reports that the property has generated numerous police service calls and is operating in a manner resembling long-term occupancy.
Staff said the property has generated approximately 197 calls for police service and that the business had submitted an incomplete zoning-board filing regarding its status. Tom Boyd and other staff identified an occupancy rule that limits continuous non-contract stays and requires operators to petition the business administrator in writing if a guest remains beyond 31 days in certain circumstances.
Several council members described the site as a drain on public safety resources and supported declining the renewal until zoning, safety and occupancy questions are resolved. The motion to decline the license renewal passed on a unanimous roll-call vote.
Next steps: Council directed staff to pursue enforcement actions under the township code and state law as appropriate; the township's legal and code teams will follow up on violations and any necessary court actions.
