The Spencer City Council on March 26 accepted a no-match $10,000 Tennessee America 250 grant to support the city's July 3 America's 250 celebration and approved a fireworks contract for $9,400.
Mayor Farmer told the council the grant requires no local match and will be used toward July 3 events that are still being planned. For the fireworks show, the city received two bids: Big R Fireworks for $9,400 and Pyro Shows for $22,050. The council extended the fireworks display to 30 minutes for the America's 250 observance and awarded the contract to Big R Fireworks after a motion from Alderman David Chandler, seconded by Alderman Jill Bouldin.
Mayor Farmer said no acceptable bids for a stage were received and the item will be rebid. He also presented two lighting options for the track — full street lighting via Caney Fork (either eight poles around the track or four through the middle on dusk-to-dawn schedules) or smaller landscaping lights that can be switched on and off — and Alderman Jill Bouldin requested a feasibility comparison. No board action was taken on the stage or lighting at this meeting.
Roll-call votes for the grant and the fireworks contract followed the council's standard pattern; both measures passed with the three members present voting yes.
