The item had been taken off the table at the start of the meeting after Mayor Farmer requested a motion; Alderman David Chandler moved and Alderman Jody Hensley seconded that procedural motion. Council discussed the scope of mayoral duties during the debate — including securing funding, writing grants, coordinating with state and local officials, and addressing municipal services such as streets, parks and law enforcement — and several members said the public should have clarity about the position's responsibilities. Alderman Darrell Nance moved to change the salary to $40,000; Alderman David Chandler seconded. Roll-call votes were recorded as Yes from Hensley, Nance, Campbell, Chandler and Bouldin; the motion passed unanimously. Council specified the new salary will begin with the incoming mayoral term after the November 2026 election.
