Engineer outlines lower-cost alternative for Smith’s Bay sewer relocation; council asks for further study

At the June 9 meeting Jason Eygabroad of Beck Engineering presented an alternative to the City’s original concept for relocating the sanitary sewer adjacent to Smith’s Bay.
Eygabroad described a plan that would place a small lift station near the Okoboji Store to pump wastewater north along the Highway 71 right-of-way and connect to an existing sewer near Gordon Street. The alternative would require reconfiguring the private wastewater system serving Smith’s RV so its flows could be routed by gravity to a separate lift station, then pumped north and tied into the existing Iowa Great Lakes Sanitary District sewer line. Eygabroad told the council this option would be significantly less expensive than the original concept, which contemplated a larger lift station in the Highway 71 right-of-way serving both properties.
Councilmembers noted that three residences still use the existing adjacent sewer line and would have to be rerouted before that line could be fully abandoned. Eygabroad said he has a meeting scheduled for next week and will continue refining the proposed plan; the council expressed general support for further evaluation. No formal decision or funding commitment was recorded.
