Okoboji council approves insurance, contracts and Morningside Drive pay application; sets rezoning hearing

The Okoboji City Council on June 9 unanimously approved a FY27 insurance package, several service agreements and Pay Application #1 for the Morningside Drive reconstruction project; it also set a July 14 public hearing to consider rezoning the Pearson Lakes Art Center property.
Mayor Mary VanderWoude called the Okoboji City Council to order on June 9 and the council approved a slate of routine contracts and project payments at the meeting.
Curt Petersen of Bank Midwest presented the proposed casualty, liability and workers’ compensation insurance package for fiscal year 2026–27. City Administrator Michael Meyers told the council the premium was “quite a bit less than what was anticipated.” Following the presentation, Councilmember Hentges moved and Councilmember Andres seconded approval; the council voted 5–0 to adopt the insurance package.
The council also approved an agreement with the Northwest Iowa Planning and Development Commission for the FY27 SHEILD program; a Purchase of Service contract for transportation services with Regional Transit Authority/RIDES, Inc. (annual cost increased from $4,000 to $5,000); and an Agreement for Maintenance and Repair of Primary Roads in Municipalities with the Iowa Department of Transportation. Each of those motions passed on 5–0 votes.
City Administrator Meyers presented Pay Application #1 for $140,537.58 and Change Order #1 for $3,200 for the 2025 Morningside Drive Reconstruction project. Jason Eygabroad of Beck Engineering provided an update on near-completion work. Councilmember Andres moved and Councilmember Sanders seconded approval of the pay application and change order; the motion passed 5–0.
The council approved Resolution #26-08 to set a public hearing for July 14 to consider a Planning and Zoning Commission recommendation to rezone 2201 Highway 71 N (Pearson Lakes Art Center) from split C-1/R-1 to entirely C-1; the motion to set the hearing passed 5–0.
