Council schedules special called meeting to fill alderman vacancy; approves records-retention policy first reading and Chamber 5K permit

The Spencer City Council on Sept. 25 agreed to hold a special called meeting to appoint an alderman to serve the remainder of a term through October 2026. Four citizens expressed interest: Jill Bouldin, Tim Ross and Lisa Wilkinson (present) and Gage Farmer (unable to attend). Applicants introduced themselves during the meeting and the council voted to schedule further consideration at a special called session.
On a separate item, City Recorder Crystal Crain presented a records-retention policy based on Municipal Technical Advisory Service (MTAS) guidance she received in Nashville. The policy was approved on first reading; Crain said items will still go before the board for approval before disposal.
The council also granted the Chamber permission to host a 5K on Nov. 22, 2025. The event will begin at the city park and use approximately 1.5 miles inbound on Maynard; organizers said the closure could affect Turkey Scratch and Simmions St. Event plans include a children’s 'gobble wobble' on the park trail. The council suggested organizers coordinate with local fire departments and consider lane closures rather than a full road closure; Alderman David Chandler moved to approve the permit and the motion carried.
With no other business, the council adjourned.
