Demorest council approves insurance renewals, fireworks contract and software extension; OKs vehicle surplus

The Demorest City Council on Feb. 3 unanimously approved a package of routine contracts and administrative actions during its regular session at the Demorest Municipal Conference Center.
Mayor Jerry Harkness announced staff recommended contracting with Traveler Insurance for the city’s commercial insurance policy for $165,428. Councilman Donnie Bennett moved to approve the contract; Councilman Andrew Ferguson seconded, and the motion passed 4-0.
The council also voted to renew the city’s employee health insurance with Level Health Gold after staff recommended the renewal. Councilman Andrew Ferguson moved to renew the plan, Councilman Jimmy Davis seconded, and the motion carried unanimously.
City Manager Mark Musselwhite requested approval of a $28,000 fireworks agreement with longtime vendor Pyrotecnico; the council approved the contract and Musselwhite noted the fireworks will be launched from the park. The council likewise approved a three-year contract extension with ACG to continue current software services at the existing price.
On asset disposition, the council approved surplusing two police vehicles — a 2011 Chevy Tahoe (VIN#8081) and a 2016 Dodge Charger (VIN#1767). The council recommended listing the Tahoe with a $4,500 minimum bid and the Charger with a $5,000 minimum bid on GovDeals, with buyers responsible for removing equipment. Staff was authorized to lower minimums to $3,000 if those thresholds are not met; if the $3,000 minimums are not met, City Manager Mark Musselwhite must return the matter to the council.
All votes on these items were recorded as unanimous (4-0). The council’s actions were procedural approvals of staff recommendations; none resulted in conditions or amendments beyond the minimum-bid contingency for the surplused vehicles.
Next steps: staff will execute the approved contracts and list the surplus vehicles on GovDeals under the minimums the council set.
