Demorest council approves routine measures including insurance renewal, LMIG authorization and surplus of old fire truck

The Demorest City Council handled several routine administrative and budget-related items during its Jan. 6 meeting.
Council approved renewal of the city's workers' compensation policy with Apex Insurance at $37,353. The council also authorized Mayor Jerry Harkness to sign LMIG documents and approved surplus of a 1997 Simon fire truck for not less than $5,000, with proceeds to be used for police department needs in 2026.
Because the originally planned inspector, David Turpin, withdrew for health reasons, the council authorized the city manager and city attorney to work with the county to draft a contract for inspection and plan review services. Council also noted operational items in the manager's report including transition of fire services with Habersham County and a move toward iPads for meeting materials.
