Hoffman Estates Police revamps Citizens and Cadet Academy, adds drones and virtual reality

Sergeant Phil Giacone said the Hoffman Estates Police Department this year combined its Cadet and Citizens Police Academy, shortened and revamped the curriculum and introduced new technology to the course, including drones and virtual reality.

"We added drones, we added our virtual reality," Giacone said, describing changes meant to make the program more engaging and informative. He told attendees the class enrolled 31 people "— it's the biggest one we've had in a long time" and included a cross‑section of residents such as retirees, nurses, teachers and local workers.

The academy, Giacone said, emphasizes education, open communication and hands‑on learning intended to strengthen relationships between the department and residents. Organizers also replaced traditional keepsakes with a commemorative challenge coin bearing the village and Tactical Asian Community Team insignia, which was handed out along with certificates at the graduation.

Names of participants and cadets were read at the ceremony. Organizers noted that some cadets completed a pre‑probationary period and are now official cadets who will assist the department with traffic direction and volunteer support at village events. One cadet, identified by organizers as Rogelio, was noted as leaving for boot camp in one week.

The ceremony included acknowledgements of the village board; presenters thanked Mayor McCloud, trustees and the village clerk for supporting the program. Organizers said they plan to continue the revised academy in future years as a pathway for community members to learn about department operations.

The graduation and program details were presented during the Hoffman Estates Citizen broadcast and at the in‑person ceremony for graduates and their families.
