The commission deferred action on a resolution to change oversight of the Cheatham County archives and return the item at the September meeting.
Library leadership and the archivist urged that archives remain with the public library, citing preservation expertise and warnings from state archival officials that archives overseen by elected officials can be subject to instability over time. Director testimony described the library's climate‑controlled space and argued the library is well suited to steward permanent historic records.
A motion to defer the item to July failed; a subsequent motion to defer to September passed 9–3. The library director warned the board that if action removed the archives from library care, the library board might pursue formal steps to vacate the county-held space to protect taxpayers' investment and the archival collection.
The deferral gives commissioners time to gather more information and allows the new administration time to weigh in before the issue returns in September.
