At the March 18 meeting the Board of Finance heard that an automatic alerting function that wakes on-call Madison Ambulance crews stopped working after a technology upgrade last October. A board member described the alerting as previously tied to the dispatch system so lights and alarms would automatically wake responders when a medical call came in; the upgrade removed that automatic function, and crews have since relied on manual dispatch alerts.
The board was told Russell Pearson (ambulance side) and Captain York in police dispatch have an open ticket with NextG, the vendor responsible for the affected equipment, but the issue has not yet been resolved. Members said the lack of reliable automatic nighttime alerts is particularly problematic for calls when crews are sleeping and urged the select board to pursue a repair or an alternative solution.
The report prompted agreement that the Board of Selectmen (referred to in the meeting as the board of select) will need to be involved in decisions about contract remedies or vendor replacement; no formal directive or funding vote was taken at the meeting.
