Sewer, maintenance, fire/rescue and library reports headline council updates

Council heard a series of departmental updates at the July 8 meeting covering sewer operations, maintenance work, fire/rescue activity and library and tourism grants.
The June sewer report was submitted; council agreed to compare the costs of rebuilding a lift-station pump versus replacing it and did not record a final decision. Maintenance staff reported ongoing work on Council Drive and North Cross streets and discussed stop signs in the Main Street business district. Fire/Rescue representative Rick Schaffer reported that the departments have responded to 140 calls in 2024 to date.
Library Board member Margaret Blair presented June minutes and said the library received a grant from the Greater Madison County Community Foundation for a new computer; the Gateway tourism entity also received a grant from the same foundation for a planned bathroom renovation, expected to start in August (grant amounts not specified in the minutes). Council noted that barricades for Old Settlers street closures will be placed beginning Friday, July 19. The Emergency Management director’s report was submitted and Mayor Pro Tem Megan Allison provided an update on Hinterland.
