Veterans services officer Kris Bergh to retire in December; reports outreach, caseload and statutory duties

Kris Bergh, Marquette County's Veterans Services Officer, reported to the Human Services Board on April 4 that the office has closed 17 cases since the last report and that 13 cases remain at the Board of Appeals. Bergh said four veterans have passed away since the prior report and outlined outreach and training dates, including participation in Youth in Government Day on April 15.
Bergh told the board that veterans plan to meet with legislators at the State Capitol to discuss expanding veterans’ and survivors’ property tax credits. Bergh also reviewed the history and statutory basis for the county's service: CVSO history dates to 1932 and, Bergh said, Chapter 45 requires counties to provide a CVSO. Bergh noted he was appointed in 2016 and currently has one full‑time assistant. The office assists veterans with healthcare, subsistence, disability benefits, property tax credits, VA home loan certificates and education programs.
Bergh announced an intent to retire in December 2025; the board did not record a replacement plan at the April 4 meeting. No vouchers were presented for the CVSO at this meeting.
