Marquette County adopts tax-deed ordinance and orders issuance of tax deeds on unpaid parcels

Marquette County took formal action in 2024 to pursue tax-deed enforcement for unpaid 2019 taxes and to adopt a new ordinance governing tax-deeded lands consistent with Wisconsin Act 207.
In April the board passed Resolution 21-2024 ordering issuance of tax deeds to the county for specified parcels across several towns (Buffalo, Neshkoro, Newton, Packwaukee, Oxford, Westfield), listing appraised values as recorded in the resolution. The list in the resolution included parcel descriptions, town names and appraised values based on assessed values.
Later in the year the board adopted Resolution 47-2024 (December) to add Chapter 76 — Tax Deed Lands — to the county code. The ordinance implements Act 207 changes by requiring notice to former owners of possible proceeds, establishing appraisal and publication timelines, providing a repurchase window for owner-occupied single-family residences, delegating acquisition and sale authority to the Property Committee, and outlining sale and bidding methods (open/closed bid, MLS or broker-assisted sale). The ordinance also prescribes accounting and mailing procedures for distributing proceeds and handling unclaimed funds.
The board appointed or confirmed administrative steps (appraisals within 120 days of acquisition, notice timelines, and methods of sale) and delegated authority to the Property Committee to determine whether to acquire particular properties and to proceed with sales. The ordinance takes effect two weeks after publication.
