East Hampton America 250 committee outlines July parade plans and summer events

The Town of East Hampton America 250 Committee met April 14 at Town Hall and by Zoom, adopted its agenda and approved the March 24 minutes before discussing community events and parade participation for the federal bicentennial celebration. Co-Chair Kevin Reich reported the committee received a form for the America 250 parade in Middletown on July 4 and said the town will need details on floats and participants; he also said the VFW will not be able to oversee the veteran banner program and that the committee will seek a town representative to manage that project.
Mary Krogh, representing the Lions Club, reviewed three events the club will sponsor: a Navy Band concert at the high school on May 12 at 6 p.m., preceded by food service (hot dogs, chili dogs, donuts and coffee) and distribution of 250-logo buttons, with invitations extended to Rocky Hill Veterans Home and residents of Marlborough and Portland; an August activity day before school starts featuring booths from local businesses such as the Yard Goats and Dunkin; and an end-of-September program in which a Lions member will portray local historical figure Joel West Smith at the library and at schools.
Cap Egan reported several community events: a Bevin Bell “13 Bells for 13 Colonies” treasure hunt beginning in June with 13 numbered bells hidden around East Hampton (finders are asked to photograph finds and tag Bevin Bell on social media); a Bevin Bell open house on Saturday, June 27 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; a Rotary Club 0.5K road-race fundraiser from Sears Park to Lakeside Restaurant on Sunday, June 7; and a Friends of Lake Pocotopaug Light Up the Lake event tentatively set for either Saturday, Aug. 8 or Aug. 15.
Terry Latimer said she is awaiting word from students who visited local cemeteries on Good Friday to look for graves of Revolutionary War soldiers. Committee members agreed to move the committee’s regularly scheduled May 12 meeting to Tuesday, May 5 at 5:00 p.m. to avoid conflict with the Navy Band concert.
Procedural actions recorded in the minutes included a motion by Jack Solomon, seconded by Terry Concannon, to adopt the agenda (voted 8-0); a motion by Solomon, seconded by Latimer, to approve the March 24 minutes as written (voted 8-0); and a motion by Concannon, seconded by Latimer, to adjourn (voted 9-0). The meeting adjourned at 5:50 p.m.
