MSBA advances Berkshire Hills building application; committee readies community outreach ahead of vote

The Berkshire Hills School Committee was told the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) voted to advance the district's building application and indicated an MSBA contribution in the $59 million to $61 million range.

Committee members said the next steps include a series of community engagement meetings to explain the options and the likely costs to local taxpayers. The district scheduled informational sessions at area town libraries and a larger meeting at the high school on Sept. 16; an additional building meeting was noted for Sept. 10. Committee members urged broad community outreach so residents can make an informed choice.

Speakers emphasized that the community will face a major investment either way: repairing the existing building or building new, and that the costs are comparable when long-term service life is considered. The committee discussed communications tactics including yard signs and buttons and asked staff to check constraints such as ethics rules for on-site campaigning. Members also suggested preparing a unified public statement or an opinion piece after the committee takes its formal vote.

The committee plans to place a formal school-committee vote on the building recommendation on a future agenda; committee leaders said a unanimous or near-unanimous vote would be powerful public messaging in advance of the town-level decision. The committee urged members to engage across September and October to inform voters ahead of the scheduled local decision.
