Council introduces private-wells ordinance, clarifies existing wells to be grandfathered

Tega Cay City Council on Jan. 28 introduced and gave first reading to an ordinance to adopt Chapter 54, Article V of the city code that would prohibit new private wells.
Utilities Director Antonio Maturo told council the ordinance’s purpose is to prohibit new wells to eliminate the risk of contamination to the city's water system if a cross connection were to occur. Council and staff clarified that residents who currently have private wells would be grandfathered and that irrigation wells would not be affected as written. Councilmember Brian D. Carter moved to approve the introduction and first reading with an adjustment to section 54-26 to refer to "existing wells" rather than a reference to irrigation; Councilmember Heather Jones seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
