Village Manager Dave Post told the Village of Hillman Council on Dec. 2 that FEMA grants are expected to be approved and that Becky with Huron Engineering has submitted grant applications for GIS mapping and sewer/water projects. Post said the village has advertised a surplus Buick for sale with no bids so far and that staff will be collecting bids and preparing applications for Category B road grants and a Community Development Block Grant to fund water-well drilling.
During public comment, visitor Mickey McIntire asked the council to send Department of Public Works crews to plow the bike and walkable paths on the east side of the Hillman Community Center. President Dave Hornbacher said DPW would plow the paths if workers have time but that clearing them would not be a priority compared with other duties. Council member John Burr said snowmobilers had been riding on sidewalks after a recent snowstorm and compacting the snow, making removal more difficult; Sergeant Breed of the Montmorency County Sheriff Department said he would look into the reports and notify the department.
Parks worker Mike Wilson reported he is closing the park for winter, transitioning the reservation system to Let's Camp and needs 2026 camp rates by January because reservations start then; he said he will prepare a list of park budget priorities such as campsite improvements and signage. President Hornbacher reported the fire department had three runs and emergency medical services had 44 runs in November and that the village hired an EMT and is considering hiring another paramedic. Trustee Steve Orlandi noted a pocket park near Emerick Park is dark because lights are out and requested attention.
Judy Nichols announced holiday programming at Brush Creek Mill, including a Santa appearance Dec. 6 and memorial bulb sales through Dec. 18; she said the Mill will be closed January through April and that a Mathias memorial tree has been planted with a spring dedication planned.
Manager Post said he will be out of the office Dec. 4–5 and that he has contacted the owners of the property at Hillman Power to encourage yard leveling or landscaping. The council asked staff and the sheriff’s office to follow up on plowing priorities and sidewalk snowmobile enforcement as appropriate.
