Town of Albany council hires full-time police officer, approves financials and business license

The Town of Albany council unanimously approved a series of routine items and a personnel hire at its Aug. 11 regular meeting at Albany Town Hall. Mayor Eileen Bates-McCarroll presided over the meeting, which began at 6:00 p.m. and ended at 6:41 p.m.
Councilman Jerry Glascock moved and Councilman Gerald Stilley seconded approval of the July 2025 minutes; the motion carried with Yeas recorded for Councilwoman Kim Stewart, Councilman Jerry Glascock, Councilman Gerald Stilley, Councilman Don Onofry and J. Thomas. Shortly afterward, Councilwoman Kim Stewart moved to approve the July financials; that motion was also seconded and approved unanimously.
During routine reports, Ross Kinchen provided Planning & Zoning committee updates to the mayor and council. Police Chief Boyd Wild reported the department’s calls for July, called attention to a new red light and noted that the school year is starting back, which may affect patrol patterns.
On a personnel action, Councilman Don Onofry moved and Councilman Gerald Stilley seconded a motion to hire Joshua Berst as a full-time police officer, with employment retroactive to Aug. 7, 2025; the council approved the hire unanimously. The council also approved an occupational license for Heavy Duty Diesel Inc. following a motion by Councilman Gerald Stilley and a second by Councilman Jerry Glascock; that vote was unanimous.
In the Mayor’s Report, Mayor Eileen Bates-McCarroll updated the council on the Hwy 43 sewer project, the proposed Bojangles development and pavement work on Hwy 43. No formal actions on those projects were recorded in the minutes.
The meeting concluded with a motion by Councilman Gerald Stilley and a second by Councilman Jerry Glascock to adjourn; the council voted unanimously and adjourned at 6:41 p.m. The minutes were signed by Clerk Kimberlee “Joey” Cooper and Mayor Eileen Bates-McCarroll.
