Lush Parish Council on Nov. 11 unanimously approved a resolution asking the United States Coast Guard and the United States Army Corps of Engineers to consider marking and dredging the channel from the Havlin Canal to the Terabone Parish channel.
Councilman Mr. Lraine, who introduced the resolution, said the canal had been the primary passage to Port Fushon before Hurricane Ida and that larger post‑Ida traffic is now using alternate channels. "This has to be addressed," Lraine said, arguing that the shift is increasing the risk of accidents and causing extra wear on parish and state bridges.
The resolution, which Lraine read aloud during the meeting, requests the federal agencies to review navigation, marking and dredging needs so commerce can continue to reach Port Fushon without burdening local infrastructure. Lraine also suggested the port commission should have input because of overlapping jurisdiction.
Chairman Oten and other council members supported the measure. The motion was moved by Mr. Lraine and seconded by Mr. Araby; the council recorded the vote with eight yays and one council member temporarily out of chambers.
The resolution asks federal agencies to "consider marking and dredging the channel from the Havlin Canal to the Terabone Parish channel" to reduce congestion and safety hazards and to ease bridge wear and tear. The council did not set a timeline for follow-up; the approved resolution is a formal request for federal review, not a funding appropriation or contract.
The council moved on to agenda items after the vote.
