Police Chief David Pernice reported at the Aug. 27 Union City Borough Council meeting that a new hire approved at the previous meeting has not responded to outreach and that he is assuming the candidate is no longer interested. Pernice said he will reach out to the regional hiring consortium (he reported 32 candidates on the list), check with the Civil Service Commission to set up oral exams and send letters to candidates.
Pernice said his preference would be to hire two part‑time officers but that only one part‑time position had been approved by council. Council agreed to continue searching for one part‑time officer and directed the chief to proceed with recruitment steps consistent with Civil Service processes.
The staffing update was presented as an informational item with next steps to return when there are candidates scheduled for exams or when the chief has further updates.
