Port Barre council unanimously approves condemnations, architect hire and grant documents; opts into temporary housing waiver

Port Barre Mayor John P. Ardoin and the town’s Board of Aldermen/Alderwoman met Sept. 2, 2025, and unanimously approved a package of actions addressing derelict properties, building renovations and infrastructure grants while introducing budget and compensation ordinances.
The council voted to condemn two properties after recommendations from Building Code Inspection Services. Council action included a condemnation order for a property on 725 Josie Street (confirmed on the inspector’s recommendation) and a separate condemnation for 127 Jacqueline Street. Mayor Ardoin said the owner of the Jacqueline Street property "has been in touch with us and advised us that they will be demolishing the property," and the council advised the owner has until the October 2025 meeting to complete the demolition.
On a separate motion, the council granted Mayor Ardoin authority to enter an intergovernmental agreement with St. Landry Parish that would allow the parish to sell certain town-adjudicated properties; Cynthia Fontenot, speaking on behalf of Parish President Jessie Belfard, told the council the parish intends to sell adjudicated properties and requested the town’s cooperation. That motion passed unanimously.
The council also authorized hiring an architect to plan renovations to the former "Glass Systems" building and adopted a resolution authorizing the mayor to execute documents for a Capital Outlay grant to build sidewalks along Highway 103/Saizan Avenue; both measures passed without opposition.
Councilmembers voted to adopt a resolution to "opt in" to the EEMA Temporary Housing and Shelter Assistance Program expedited temporary housing assistance waiver for lane use and permitting. The transcript records the program name and waiver language as presented to the council; the town’s motion adopted that authorization unanimously.
