The Town of Sheffield Select Board voted Sept. 8 to accept a donated 19-foot Zodiac inflatable boat, a 20-horsepower Mercury outboard motor and a trailer from Hose Company No. 1 so the town can register and insure the equipment for municipal use.
Steven Hire, a member of the Sheffield Fire Department and the volunteer Hose Company No. 1, told the board the equipment was purchased about a year ago and that hose company members voted to donate the “whole kit” to the town so it could be placed on the town’s inventory and covered by municipal insurance. Hire said he brought the paperwork, including a Massachusetts title for the boat with the transfer name left blank, bills of sale for the motor and trailer registration documentation.
Board members reviewed registration steps and paperwork. Hire noted that boat registration is handled through the Massachusetts Environmental Police and that the trailer requires a plate from the RMV in Springfield. He also read warranty language showing the motor’s warranty excludes commercial or rescue use, a detail the board discussed while reviewing insurance and operational considerations.
A motion to accept the donation was moved and seconded; the board took a voice vote. One member voiced opposition on the record, though the board proceeded to the next agenda item and did not record a formal tally in the transcript.
The board directed staff and fire department leaders to complete title transfer, registration and insurance paperwork and to coordinate any necessary trips to the Springfield registry.
