Wright County proclaims August Child Support Awareness Month; HHS highlights collection performance and honors retiring staff

Wright County—s health and human services division asked the board Tuesday to accept modest donations and to proclaim August 2025 as Child Support Awareness Month; the board approved both actions.
Karen Popkin, child support enforcement supervisor, told commissioners that Wright County exceeds state averages on key child-support performance measures. "State average collections every county averages at 73%. But Wright County is at 79%," she said, adding the office collects nearly $1 million each month. Popkin also described the county—s cost-effectiveness, reporting Wright County collects $5.99 for every $1 spent compared with a state average of $2.65, and noted the program operates with 15 staff whose combined service totals 162 years.
The board unanimously adopted the proclamation recognizing August as Child Support Awareness Month and accepted the listed donations totaling $590 to support HHS programs.
Separately, HHS recognized Cecilia, a long-serving county employee retiring July 31. Supervisors and colleagues recounted Cecilia—s service across multiple departments since 1996, praised her institutional knowledge and help with information systems, and presented a plaque in appreciation of her years of service.
Commissioners thanked HHS staff for their work and noted training and community events coming this fall.
