Commissioners approve rezoning request and urge formal township-notification step

The Wright County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a rezoning request designated as consent item C2 on June 16, but several commissioners said the county should tighten its application process so townships are notified and have an opportunity to provide input before Planning & Zoning hearings.
Commissioner Moyna said the county has seen applicants go directly to the county and skip the township step, leaving townships unaware until after a Planning & Zoning hearing. “They should have to go to the township first and then to planning and zoning after they get some sort of confirmation,” Moyna said, urging staff to require at least a written indication from the township before an application is considered complete.
The motion to approve the rezoning passed without opposition. Chair noted the board can consider procedural changes in the coming land‑use plan work over the next 12–18 months to formalize township involvement.
Commissioner Holland, speaking from the Planning & Zoning perspective, said the county already places weight on township feedback and expressed support for clarifying procedures as rezonings have arrived at an increased pace. The board did not adopt a formal ordinance at the meeting to change application rules; commissioners requested that staff return with language or administrative steps to add township notification requirements to the application checklist.
The board’s action was limited to approving the single rezoning on the consent agenda; any future change to the application process or formal rule would require further drafting and board approval.
