Library director outlines budget trims and policy revisions; materials line to drop $5,000 next year

Director Meena Jain reported May 26 that the library is in good shape financially for the end of FY27 but previewed budget adjustments for the coming year. Meena said the professional development (PD) line will be removed from the proposed budget and suggested the Friends group could be asked to cover some staff PD costs. She also reported the materials line will be reduced from $75,000 to $70,000.
Meena told trustees that, because of the expected reduction in materials and other constraints, staff will need to scale back programming to sustainable levels next year rather than “firing on all cylinders.” Trustees discussed submitting copy edits to the employee handbook; Meena will incorporate edits ahead of next month's meeting. Trustees also discussed a proposed permanent art collection policy, asking for additions on deaccession criteria and process, archive/documentation and a conflict-of-interest provision; trustees were asked to send suggestions to the director.
Operational notes included that new grant-funded computers have arrived but are not yet installed, and the library experienced early closures the week of May 19 because of power and internet outages affecting facilities and air conditioning. Trustees did not take formal budget votes at the meeting; the director framed these as planning and draft adjustments for the coming fiscal year.
