Library Youth Services ramps up Summer Reading; new grant-funded intern to join staff

Assistant Director and Director of Youth Services Lindsay Ward told trustees May 26 that Summer Reading planning is well underway and described it as the department’s "holiday season" because of high engagement from children and adults. Ward said school visits to promote the program are scheduled to begin next week.
Ward announced Connor Brown, who graduated in 2025 with a Master of Library Science, accepted a summer library intern position funded by a five-year grant from MCC that began in summer 2025. Ward said Brown will work with Jackie on the garden outside the children’s side doors and brings a school-library background.
Ward also reported collections and programming updates: a major move of picture books has begun, the Children’s Department offered 45 programs in April with over 1,400 attendees, and the Teen Department ran five programs with 31 attendees. During April break the library ran 13 programs that attracted about 500 people, and more than 100 participants took part in a scavenger hunt.
Ward’s update emphasized maintaining engagement while matching staff capacity; trustees did not take formal action on these items during the meeting.
