Resident asks town to maintain alley between Post Office and Town Hall; board agrees
Summary
Edwin “Smokey” Smith told the Select Board he can no longer plow the alley used for postal loading and asked the town to assume maintenance; the board voted unanimously to have highway take over the space.
Resident Edwin “Smokey” Smith told the Select Board that boundary work from 1999 shows he owns “two feet beyond the porch of the Post Office Building” but that the town owns the remainder of the alley where postal vehicles load. Smith said he historically plowed and maintained the alley but can no longer obtain insurance to continue doing so and asked the town to take over plowing and maintenance.
Board members discussed mail loading hours, vehicle restrictions, parking and a Nature Conservancy proposal to remove chain-link fencing for additional parking. After discussion Selectman William Hodgman moved to have the highway department assume maintenance of the space between Town Hall and the Post Office; Selectman Mike Carrier seconded and the motion passed 3–0.
Public commenter Sean Leary offered to rearrange postal truck timing if necessary to reduce plowing conflicts. The Board did not record any conditions attached to the highway department taking responsibility; implementation details were not specified in the minutes.
