The Santa Clara City Council unanimously appointed Honor Vargas Smith to the Cultural Commission and placed Sean Williams on a six‑month eligibility list in case a vacancy arises.
Vargas Smith, who spoke to the council in person, urged preservation and activation of downtown and recommended expanding heritage walking tours with QR‑code audio, more public art and regular night‑market‑style events to highlight the city’s multicultural identity. "Keeping that legacy alive" was how she described downtown street events and the role of the commission in supporting local festivals.
Sean Williams, a small‑business owner and former planning commissioner, emphasized live music and more visible murals and public art to bring attention to under‑represented corners of the city.
Council followed the same structured interview and voting process used for other appointments. The city clerk will notify the appointee about oath of office and orientation procedures.
