Auburndale approves modest garbage-rate increase amid rising landfill fees

The Auburndale City Commission on July 21 approved Ordinance No. 1831, raising the monthly household garbage rate from $21.72 to $22.15 and authorizing a 2% annual increase for the next five years to cover projected landfill and operating cost increases.
City Manager Jeffrey Tillman told commissioners that Polk County notified the city the county’s North Central Landfill tipping fees will increase effective Oct. 1, 2025 — solid waste fees will rise from $36.50 to $46.00 per ton, and yard-waste disposal fees from $22.00 to $36.50 per ton — and that county fees are expected to increase annually by 5% for the next five years. “Based on the evaluation, staff recommends increasing the garbage rate to $22.15, an increase of 2%,” Tillman said.
Staff presented historical sanitation revenues and expenditures and compared Auburndale’s proposed rates with neighboring municipalities to justify the change and recommended the annual 2% escalation to maintain service levels. City Attorney Frederick J. Murphy Jr. read Ordinance No. 1831 by title on second and final reading before the commission voted; there was no public comment.
Vice Mayor Alex Cam moved and Commissioner Keith Cowie seconded the motion to approve Ordinance No. 1831 on second and final reading. The vote was unanimous; four members present voted aye and one commissioner was absent. The ordinance is effective as provided in the ordinance text and will be implemented per staff instructions beginning Oct. 1, 2025, consistent with the landfill fee changes.
