National City Public Art Committee members on July 23 discussed program updates and planning steps for the coming year, including partnerships with local schools, apprenticeship opportunities, grant applications for a Pure Volvosari initiative, and a proposed community crochet project.
Staff reported that the committee’s team is working with the National School District to bring programming to 10 schools for grades 2–6, expanding paid apprenticeship opportunities (including metalwork/welding) and community arts classes. Staff said several grant applications tied to Baldessari-related programming (referred to in the meeting as “Pure Volvosari”) are pending and could fund exhibitions, curricular work in schools, and a dedicated gallery space for rotating displays.
“We got our contractor group with the National School District, so we will once be working in all 10 schools, and with grades 2nd through 6th,” staff said, summarizing the partnership plans and outreach to school sites. Members discussed updating the Cultural Arts Plan (last revised in 2022) and debated workshop formats: some favored an internal working session followed by public input; others suggested public-first engagement. Staff offered to coordinate with the city clerk to ensure compliance with the Brown Act and to provide examples of workshop formats used by other municipalities.
A recreation supervisor, Seide, presented a community crochet concept generated by a morning social program that would create crochet blocks to wrap trees or other fixtures and suggested cross-generational participation (seniors and youth). He cautioned that parks maintenance must sign off because staff maintain trees and would need to assess whether the project is acceptable.
Committee members agreed to pursue goal-setting with options for a working retreat and public engagement; staff will circulate examples and work with the city clerk to plan a workshop that balances internal planning and community input.
