Library reports 1 Book participation, summer meals and staff hires; trustees confirm upcoming interviews

Library staff updated trustees on programs, staffing and upcoming events. The branch joined 1 Book 1 San Diego and will distribute adult and teen titles in English and Spanish to local patrons, staff said.
Staff reported that the Webster Library summer program served about 500 meals to children ages 0–18, funded in part by the California State Library, and described a return to regularly scheduled after-school programs (homework help, Legos, crafts, Gamers' World and STEAM). ‘Café nights’ resumed as a monthly program after summer, and staff said they would promote 1 Book programming and KPBS tie-ins.
On personnel, staff announced hiring Shane Drouse as academic enrichment coordinator (started Aug. 20) and said a candidate for technical services librarian has accepted an offer and is expected to begin in mid-September; interviews for the city librarian positions are scheduled for late September and staff said they expect to report back at the next meeting.
Staff also outlined an open-house fundraiser to be scheduled (trustees discussed whether a Friday or Saturday would draw more families) and asked for donated baskets for library fundraising. The meeting closed with trustees thanking Fred for his service to the library.
