Middletown council approves truck repair, contract work and K‑9 pay; votes to end K‑9 program

Middletown — At a regular meeting on May 6, 2014, the Middletown Town Council unanimously approved several routine maintenance and contract actions and adopted a resolution to pay a police officer for back K‑9 handling pay.
Council Member Norm Purdue moved to authorize the Utilities Superintendent to hire Altec to repair the town’s small bucket truck for up to $6,825.25; Gary Kendall seconded and the motion passed unanimously. Council President Betty Riley then moved to authorize ISC, the engineering branch of IMPA, to prepare new pole rental contracts with AT&T and Comcast for up to $4,500; Gary Kendall seconded and that motion also passed unanimously.
During a public hearing the council considered an additional appropriation from the Rainy Day Fund to make a payment of $6,961.50 to Officer Mike Vacarro for back K‑9 handling pay. Norm Purdue moved to approve Resolution 05‑06‑2014‑1, which the council adopted unanimously. Separately, Betty Riley moved that the town not continue the Middletown Police K‑9 program at this time; Norm Purdue seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
Clerk‑Treasurer Drew Cooper recorded that Council Members Betty Riley, Gary Kendall, Bill Harrison and Norm Purdue were present and that Council Member Shelly Kimmerling was absent. Town Attorney Joel Harvey was present.
The council concluded its business and adjourned. The council agreed by consensus to move the June 3 meeting to June 10 because of the Middletown Lions Club Fair Parade.
