Marlette council approves MDOT paving services, adopts utility billing update and clears multiple resolutions

The Marlette City Council on Jan. 5, 2026 approved an engagement with Fleis & Vanderbrink and authorized $19,800 in professional services tied to an MDOT Category B grant to pave Cranbrook and Concord Streets. Councilmember Redman moved the engagement approval; Councilmember Kopacz seconded, and the motion passed on a 5–0 roll-call vote (Councilmembers Redman, Edwards, Bell, Kopacz and Hunter voted yes; Wilson absent).
The council also adopted an updated City of Marlette utility billing policy after Manager Malzahn reviewed the changes and Clerk Rebecca Slater answered council questions. Councilmember Kopacz moved to adopt the policy as presented; Councilmember Edwards seconded and the motion carried 5–0.
Other actions approved by the council included: the second reading of Ordinance #01-2026 (Chapter 2, Administration); authorization to sell a 2011 Dodge Charger through Albrecht auction and to purchase a 2015 Explorer Interceptor from the Village of Peck for $6,000 plus rebranding costs (motion by Hunter; Bell seconded); PA 152 Resolution #01/2026 to opt out of publicly funded health insurance (motion by Redman); and Resolution #02/2026 concerning local gaming licenses (motion by Hunter). All motions passed on 5–0 roll-call votes where recorded.
Manager Malzahn informed the council that the MDOT Category B grant submitted under an interim manager had been awarded for paving work. The council approved the contractual engagement with Fleis & Vanderbrink to support the grant application and project administration at an authorized cost of $19,800.
Mayor Charles Bush reviewed the 2026 board and commission appointments, describing reappointments to the DDA, Park Board and Planning Commission and several new appointments; Kopacz moved to approve the appointment list and the council approved it unanimously.
During council comments members discussed placing a community park and pool millage on the August 2026 ballot and noted there is budget authority to open the pool in June 2026 if pursued. One public comment was recorded during the meeting.
The meeting opened at 6:00 PM and adjourned at 6:50 PM.
