Superintendent apologizes, lays out plan after driver's-ed instructor resignation

Superintendent Dr. Simone Griffin apologized to families for the interruption of the district's driver's education program and told the board Aug. 12 that the program paused after the driving instructor resigned July 30, reportedly because of concerns raised by students.
Dr. Griffin said she had spoken with the driving school's CEO, identified in the meeting as Frank Mensel, and the district liaison "Rick," who confirmed the instructor resigned after expressing fear related to information shared by students. "Because of those concerns, she decided to resign," Griffin said.
The district has hired two part-time instructors to complete the driving portion of the course for affected students, Dr. Griffin said, and sessions were expected to resume within a week with "enhanced supervision and guidelines for our students." She also said district administration is reviewing student-conduct policies for off-site programs and will implement additional safety protocols.
Trustees thanked Dr. Griffin for the prompt report and for steps to resume instruction. Several trustees encouraged the district to follow up with parents about scheduling and to communicate the safety-protocol changes underpinning the restart.
