The Benton Harbor Area Schools Board approved three instructional purchases and a staffing partnership on Oct. 14 aimed at strengthening K–5 literacy, Spanish instruction, and the district’s ELL teacher pipeline.
Literacy adoption: administrators recommended and the board approved a six‑year adoption of My View Literacy K–5 (Savas Learning) covering print and digital student materials, dyslexia screeners, book‑club libraries, foundational skills kits, and professional development. The staff report listed a total cost of $288,215 including program and PD with supplemental materials provided at no additional cost; union representatives present said they supported the selection.
World‑language and ELL staffing: the board approved Authentico (Spanish) tier‑1 and tier‑2 materials ($11,134.20), including teacher editions and a six‑year digital license plus PD. Separately, the board approved a Craco partnership (staff report T3) intended to provide an ELL teacher pipeline and certification support; administrators said the Craco arrangement offers a staffing option (annual cost options presented) and recruitment/oversight services to help hire ELL‑certified teachers for Fairplane and other sites with high ELL populations.
Board requests and next steps: trustees asked administration to provide a consolidated template that shows how the new materials and staffing purchases integrate with existing curricula and previously purchased products; the superintendent agreed to produce a visual mapping for the board.
