Sanlac County honors retiring K9s Phoenix and Susanna and approves ownership transfers

The Sanlac County Board of Commissioners on March 3 read and adopted resolutions honoring K9 Phoenix and K9 Susanna for their service to the county and approved agreements transferring K9 ownership to their respective handlers.
Commissioner Roger Ballard read the resolution recognizing K9 Phoenix, acquired in January 2021 through Drug Task Force millage funding, and highlighted Phoenix’s role supporting narcotics enforcement and patrol operations alongside handler Deputy Jennifer Dat. The board adopted the resolution by roll call.
The board then read a resolution honoring K9 Susanna, purchased in August 2019 from Mid Michigan Kennels and assigned with Deputy/Sergeant James Anderson to the county jail for narcotics detection duties and institutional safety. The resolution states Susanna will retire April 1, 2026 and be placed in the care of Sergeant Anderson and family; the board adopted the resolution following a motion by Commissioner Moody and support from Commissioner Ballard.
Following the resolutions, the board approved two separate agreements authorizing transfer of K9 ownership. FA040-26 authorized transfer to Deputy Jennifer Dat and FA041-26 authorized transfer to Sergeant James Anderson; both motions were moved by Commissioner Sarkeella and carried on voice/roll-call votes. Chair John Black was authorized to sign necessary agreements.
Commissioners and staff praised the animals’ contributions during brief remarks and took photos with the dogs after the meeting; no dissent was recorded on the retirement resolutions or transfer agreements.
