Sand Lake County Medical Control demonstrates new lifelike simulation mannequins for EMS training

Leah Lens, executive director of Sand Lake County Medical Control, and Amy, the education coordinator, brought lifelike simulation mannequins to the county’s Feb. 3 commissioners meeting and demonstrated how the equipment will be used for EMS and paramedic training.
Lens said the mannequins let students practice invasive procedures and real-life scenarios such as IV starts, intubation and pediatric and obstetric emergencies without traveling to an off-site SIMS lab. "It just kind of gives us the opportunity to teach in real life," Lens said, describing infant, adolescent and adult models the program uses for ACLS, PALS and prehospital trauma simulations.
The presenters highlighted a miscarriage simulator they said recreates the physical realities trainees previously mimicked with props. Lens described the purchase as a "gift to our area," and commissioners noted the mannequins were funded with millage dollars and praised having a local SIMS capability that partner organizations can also use.
Amy and Lens said the mannequins’ realism improves muscle memory and in-the-field preparedness: "…in the heat of the moment, you've already done this," one presenter said.
The presenters also said local hospitals and partner agencies have been able to use the simulation lab for required recertifications, which reduces travel and scheduling barriers. No formal board action was required; the demonstration was informational.
