County accepts landfill-recycling bylaws as officials prepare for state recycling requirements

Sand Lake County commissioners on Dec. 16 accepted bylaws for the county landfill and recycling advisory board and discussed progress toward state recycling requirements.
Commissioners said the bylaws clarify membership, quorum and voting rules so the advisory board can operate with clearer direction. County officials described statewide mandates to increase recycling by 2030 and said they are coordinating outreach to townships, which may need to adopt individual resolutions to comply.
At a hazardous household-waste event the county reported more than 300 vehicle visits and approximately 120,000 pounds of recyclable material collected. Commissioners said those numbers and other data will inform county-wide plans and township outreach.
The board accepted the advisory-board bylaws by motion; commissioners noted the county has been taking the lead to help financially strapped townships meet state requirements and stressed that, so far, townships are not being required to cover roll-off costs. The county will continue scheduling informational meetings for townships and stakeholders as the recycling policy work proceeds.
