The Mahnomen City Council on May 4 unanimously declared three properties public nuisances, accepted a $5,000 grant navigation award, discussed establishing a $50-per-use rental fee for the firehall meeting room and approved installation of bollards at the firehall generator.
Council voted 5-0 to declare 415 W Minnesota Ave a public nuisance following a garbage complaint, and later declared 507 W Minnesota Ave and 407 W Garfield Ave public nuisances in response to vehicle complaints. Each motion was moved and seconded and carried without recorded opposition.
The council accepted Resolution 5-4-2026-2 to receive $5,000 from the League of Minnesota Cities to offset grant-writing expenses for an application to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources for a splash pad. The council recorded the acceptance by a unanimous vote.
On facility management, council members discussed a proposed rental fee for use of the firehall meeting room, noting increased demand and cleaning costs; the meeting packet lists a proposed $50 per use with consideration of lump fees for recurring groups. Council also approved a quote to install bollards to protect the firehall generator.
Other routine business included approval of consent-agenda items (minutes, financial registers and personnel items), approval of bills for April 20 and May 4, a report from the Street Department about city-wide cleanup and updates from the Mahnomen Area Community Fund (MACF) noting a $6,000 transfer to endowment and $17,000 remaining in the general account. The Blandin Placemaking letter of intent for $120,000 for playground turf was not selected to move forward, per the administrator’s report.
Sargent Ryan Zettel reported coordination with animal control on repeated dog issues; Councilmember Kelly Phillips asked for stronger curfew enforcement and additional attention to the MTCC basketball court area.
