Committee discusses 250th celebration events, patch fundraiser and beach dock repairs

At its June 3 special meeting the Sharon Parks and Recreation Committee discussed multiple items tied to the town’s 250th Anniversary and beach operations, including event proposals, donated fundraising items and a beach dock repair estimate.
Resident Will Trowbridge proposed offering horse-and-carriage rides during the Craft Fair, saying the owner (affiliated with Action Wildlife) would provide Percheron horses and that he would raise the $1,500 fee. Committee members flagged several logistical questions to be resolved before the ride could be approved — where the ride would go, insurance and required permissions, who would clean up afterward, whether the carriage would clear parked cars, and traffic control.
Residents Alex Pakis and Rachael Win donated embroidered patches representing the beach to be sold as a fundraiser; the minutes record a $20 price per patch and that proceeds will be earmarked for an amenity to be determined. R. Aakjar reported orders for lawn signs and posters for the concert series; two banners for this year’s concerts were donated by Todd Tufts (one reusable and one listing sponsors). Failla said the Scavenger Hunt for the 250 celebration is ready to go.
On beach maintenance, Parks and Recreation Director B. Failla reported hidden decay in the docks and an estimated $2,500 repair cost before the docks can go in the water. The committee discussed revisiting pricing for a non-wood dock system as a phased future replacement for aging wooden docks. Failla also reported staff is in place for Little Rascals and swim lessons, and the committee agreed Failla should post a solicitation for Little Rascals scholarship donations on the Parks and Recreation website.
The committee set its next meeting for July 9 and adjourned at 7:50 PM.
