Emergency services committee hears weather readiness briefing; sheriff reports new training and equipment

The Cumberland County Emergency Services Committee met Sept. 16, 2025, in the Cumberland Room at the Art Circle Public Library to review readiness for severe weather and to hear equipment and training updates from the sheriff's office. Chair Tom Isham called the meeting to order at 4:30 p.m.
Meteorologist Mark Baldwin told the committee he has "full confidence in all of our systems, including EMS, EMA, fire, and dispatch," but urged continued vigilance as "weather patterns are rapidly changing and causing much more destruction than originally thought possible." He also noted Tennessee Tech's GIS and mapping work as a useful local partner for forecasting.
Sheriff Casey Cox reported the department "recently completed the EMR training for several officers" and said the county is "now waiting on the AEDs to equip them with." Cox said the additional training and equipment "is going to save lives," and that more deputies will be able to serve as initial responders at scenes as a result.
Cox also said the department was awarded a grant to purchase a high-level search-and-rescue drone, a piece of equipment he described as "adding a valuable piece" to response capabilities. He added that the agency purchased a few new vehicles using donations.
No formal actions were taken on the briefing itself. The committee approved its April 17, 2025 minutes earlier in the meeting on a motion by Jerry Cooper, seconded by Greg Maxwell; the motion carried with no opposition. The meeting adjourned at 6:00 p.m.
The updates signal incremental investments in local emergency response capacity; the committee did not take votes to change operations during the meeting beyond the routine approval of minutes.
