Riley County Treasurer Shiloh Hager reported the county’s May financial position to the commission on June 18, saying total assets across checking and investments stood at $117,891,159.77 and the general fund balance was $17,284,649.52 — about $500,000 lower than the same time last year.
Hager said year‑to‑date investment income totaled $1,273,215.45 and the county’s checking account earned 3.64% in May; she also said the treasurer secured a certificate of deposit last month at 3.96% and expected more short‑term maturities in the coming weeks. Hager cautioned that as project spending reduces cash balances, interest income will decline.
On property tax receipts, Hager said ad valorem distributions were about $1 million below budget for the month and attributed the shortfall mainly to timing of collections and distributions. "I’m confident that we'll make that up by the time we do the September and October distributions," she said, noting some receipts typically arrive after the May cutoff used for June distributions.
Hager also warned that the county’s ARPA checking account is “slowly dwindling” and reminded the commission the funds must be spent by the end of the year. She presented fund‑balance detail and year‑to‑date revenue comparisons and said total sales tax retained for the general fund was up modestly year over year.
Administratively, Hager told the commission that a new Riley County motor vehicle transaction fee of $5 per transaction will go into effect July 1; she said the change will appear in motor vehicle transactions processed after that date.
The commission asked clarifying questions and accepted the treasurer’s report. No formal action was taken on budget adjustments during the session.
