The Vestavia Hills Board of Education honored the district’s speech and debate team on June 28 after two students advanced through multiple rounds at the national tournament and the pair finished fourth in their event — a best-ever result for the district in that category.
Board members and staff praised the program’s long-standing success and the students’ dedication. The board identified the students as Vivian and Arhan Alikhan; both had just graduated and said they plan to attend the University of Alabama and the University of Alabama at Birmingham, respectively.
A district coach described the national format — multiple preliminary rounds with judges and ballots, advancing to Wednesday rounds on the strength of winning the majority of ballots — and said the students advanced through successive rounds into semifinals before placing fourth. Board members called the result “incredible,” thanked the coaches and mentors, and applauded the students’ dedication.
Board members noted the program’s legacy in Vestavia Hills and thanked Mr. Connelly and other staff for sustained leadership of the activity. The board presented trophies and public applause concluded the recognition.
