At its Jan. 11 meeting the Town of Canton board denied a neighborhood traffic‑calming request after staff advised the proposal did not meet the town’s established criteria and would have negated a cost‑sharing arrangement.
Manager Scheuer told the board the current petition and data did not meet the thresholds for formal traffic‑calming measures. He said lowering the speed limit to 15 mph was one option the town could pursue, along with installing child‑playing signs and additional speed signage. Alderman Hamlett moved to deny the traffic‑calming request based on the data and to try to implement other measures as allowed; Alderwoman Mull seconded and the motion carried.
Board members acknowledged the effort by resident Jason Aytes in preparing the request. Officials said the denial was based on objective criteria in the town’s process, and that staff will explore alternatives that do not require the cost‑sharing structure proposed in the petition.
The town did not provide a timeline or cost estimate for any alternative measures at the meeting.
