The Town of Union Board voted unanimously Oct. 16 to allow placement of gunshot sensor equipment on certain NYSEG pole streetlight attachments at the request of the Village of Endicott and to execute a related Limited Assignment and Attachment Agreement, subject to final review by the Town Attorney.
The resolution, introduced by Councilman Joseph P. Nirchi, Sr. and seconded by Councilman Frank J. Bertoni, was adopted with an "All yes" vote. The board recorded the motion and authorized the Supervisor and town officials to proceed with executing the agreement after legal review.
Supporters said the technology is intended to speed law-enforcement response by detecting gunfire and providing a location. Planning Board member Dan Loiselle asked for clarification on the measure during the hearing of visitors; Councilman Nirchi explained the Village of Endicott is installing technology designed to notify law enforcement within seconds and to identify the precise location of a gunshot so officers can respond more quickly.
The resolution requires the Town Attorney’s final approval of the Limited Assignment and Attachment Agreement with NYSEG and the Village of Endicott before equipment installation. No timeline for installation was provided at the meeting.
