Leelanau County board approves Consent Agenda, accepts $47,000 marine grant and other routine items

The Leelanau County Board of Commissioners on June 16 approved a Consent Agenda that accepted a $47,000 Michigan DNR Marine Safety Program grant, authorized multiple surveyor and remonumentation agreements, renewed workers’ compensation coverage and accepted $96,487.53 in Brownfield proceeds, among other noncontroversial items.
The Leelanau County Board of Commissioners on June 16 approved a broad Consent Agenda that bundled routine grants, contracts and staffing adjustments.
Chairman Steve Yoder read the board’s standard explanation of the Consent Agenda, saying, “The purpose of the Consent Agenda is to expedite business by grouping non‑controversial items together to be dealt with by one motion without discussion.” Commissioner William Bunek moved to approve the Consent Agenda and Commissioner Rick Robbins seconded; the motion carried 7‑0.
Items approved included acceptance of a $47,000 Michigan Department of Natural Resources Marine Safety Program grant and authorization for the board chair to sign the award documents; approval of a tower‑space lease for Relevant Radio at the county’s central tower site (final signature contingent on corporate counsel approval); acceptance and authorization for HMEP grant closeout filings for the county Office of Emergency Management; and a temporary increase in Equalization Department staffing from four to five people for a 20‑day (160‑hour) training overlap.
The board also approved a slate of remonumentation and surveyor service agreements with O’Non Land Surveying, Holmberg Land Survey, Grand Traverse Surveying and Leelanau Land Surveying to support the county’s remonumentation program, with costs charged to the remonumentation account. Workers’ compensation coverage through Accident Fund National and Highstreet Insurance was renewed for $49,525 for the July 1, 2026–July 1, 2027 term.
The Brownfield Redevelopment Authority offered to return $96,487.53 in remaining proceeds from a failed real estate transaction involving the former county building; the board accepted the offer. The board also approved a release of an attorney opinion regarding administrative settlement authority, which was adopted by roll call vote.
Because most items were scheduled on the Consent Agenda, discussion was limited; the board’s unanimous approvals mean county staff are now authorized to sign agreements and proceed with the listed activities.
