Hazel Park proclaims June 2026 Pride Month and Juneteenth; honors longtime volunteer

At its June 9 meeting Hazel Park’s City Council issued ceremonial proclamations recognizing Pride Month and Juneteenth and presented the Citizen of the Month award to Vietnam veteran and longtime volunteer Nicholas “Nick” Dragon.
Andrea (Council member) read a Pride Month proclamation noting Michigan’s LGBTQ+ population estimate and Hazel Park’s protections, including references to past city actions and the June 6 pride flag raising. The council also read and adopted a Juneteenth proclamation commemorating June 19 and urging condemnation of prejudice and celebration of African-American history and culture.
The council presented the Citizen of the Month award to Nicholas Dragon, who served with the Police Department’s Mobile Communications Support Unit (MCSU) as a volunteer for more than 50 years and returned to help during a recent festival. Nick told the council, “Thanks for letting me serve with the unit to help the city out.” Fire and police leaders echoed thanks for his decades of volunteer service.
Council members also noted small-business recognition for Bar Gabby and welcomed new local business Black Cat Barber Studio; the latter's owner, Lauren, spoke about hours and services and announced a June 29 grand opening.
