Board postpones hearing on appeal over non-listed sauna unit; staff freezes distributed documents

The Troy City Building Code Board of Appeals postponed a carryover appeal related to the installation of a non-listed wood-burning sauna unit in a detached accessory structure after the applicant asked for additional time to assemble documentation.

Dominic told the board the appeal concerns an installation for which the applicant has since located additional information and that staff had asked to place certain documents that were circulated last week on a temporary freeze so the building official and staff could review the materials, including an item referenced as a sound meter. The address in the meeting record appears as 5268 Hail in some places and 5260 Hail in others; the board did not resolve that discrepancy during the meeting and staff should clarify the correct address when the case is resubmitted.

Board members agreed to postpone the hearing to the September board meeting to allow roughly 30 days for the applicant to provide the additional materials and for staff to complete their review. A motion to postpone was made and seconded; the clerk recorded unanimous votes in favor and the motion carried.

Dominic asked staff to freeze the previously distributed documents from public circulation pending the review. The board noted that if the applicant later contests an inspector’s finding or wishes to proceed, that applicant may bring a formal appeal back to the board for consideration.
