Mendon Township Fire Board approves custom badges, hears hose and tank-liner requests; chief announces May 9 job change

Mendon Township Fire Board members on April 1 approved the purchase of custom firefighter badges and heard equipment requests from Chief Avery after a busy month that included a village house fire.
Chief Avery told the board the department had "a very busy month" and noted a pattern of mutual-response calls with Lifecare: "They call us every time they get called to Mendon," he said. Avery reported two lengths of hose were ruined in the Main Street house fire and asked the board to approve buying four replacement hoses at about $209 each (estimated total $836). Treasurer Griffith said the hose is essential and explained the fire association will pay the vendor and seek reimbursement from the township because the vendor "can't bill the Township."
Avery also said the department had bought "Fold a Tanks" that did not fit the tanker and requested two replacement drop-tank liners from Midwest at about $110 each. He said the ill-fitting tanks have been usable but are "a pain to use," prompting the request for liners that match the department's equipment.
Members discussed custom, engraved badges for firefighters, which Avery said cost about $173.40 each. Treasurer Griffith noted the badges were not included in the department budget and suggested purchases might require delaying other items or sharing costs with the association; Avery said local Masons had offered to donate funds and that the department could seek reimbursement after fundraising. Trustee Watson moved to purchase the badges for the firemen; Trustee Batten supported the motion and the board carried it.
On routine business the board approved the agenda and the minutes of the March 4, 2025 meeting, accepted the treasurer's report and approved March bills by voice motions (movers and seconders were recorded in the minutes; all motions were noted as "carried").
In "Good of the Order," Chief Avery announced his last day at his current non-fire-department job will be May 9, 2025; he said he will continue to serve as Mendon Township fire chief. Clerk Donna Cupp moved to adjourn and the meeting ended at 6:55 p.m.
